Message from the Chairman of the Board

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who participated in the 2014 Bay Area Financial Education Foundation’s Annual Wine Event. It was a tremendous success. The room was full, with everyone engaged in conversation. We are all appreciative of your committed involvement.

The Bay Area Financial Education Foundation’s mission is to improve the economic education and financial literacy of Bay Area youth, and to promote professional certification in the financial services industry. It achieves its mission by providing volunteer and financial support to proven successful programs in finance, investment, and entrepreneurship in Bay Area K-12 education; and, by providing financial support for individuals pursuing related professional certifications. The objective is to introduce students to the saving and investment tools that will enable them to achieve their goals in life, and to advance qualified, certified professionals to help them along the way.

Our program partners have proven success in addressing these issues. For example, The California Council on Economic Education reaches the teachers with workshops and training on economic education. The SIFMA Stock Market Game is an educator resource with a curriculum that includes the American economy, how markets work, the stock market, and InvestWrite, an online essay competition where the student expresses what they have learned. Junior Achievement and the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship offer financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship programs.

There are some common themes that run through these programs: better decision making, understanding human capital and how to develop it, and how markets work and how to participate productively in the economy. There are also some common outcomes: improvement in confidence and leadership behavior, improved educational and occupational aspirations, improved work readiness, and an understanding of the saving and investment tools that can help the student reach their goals in life. There is one common goal: to scale the programs to reach more teachers and students.

In closing, I would like to thank Tina Marchetti, Executive Director and the Bay Area Financial Education Foundation’s Board for their support. A newly formed Advisory Board, chaired by Dan Kern, CFA contributed greatly.

We are fortunate to have the promotional support from allied professionals and would like to thank Maren Amdal and the CFA Society of San Francisco, Salina Yeung with the Financial Women’s Association, Tanya Steinhofer, and Karen Blodgett with the Financial Planning Association, Steve Vargas and Brett Villaume with the Market Technician’s Assocation, John Hyland and Wade Pitts with the San Francisco Bond Club, and Hank Pruden with the Technical Security Analysts Association of San Francisco.

We would also like to express our gratitude to our sponsors: Wells Fargo/Abbott Downing; Bank of America Merrill Lynch; Evercore Wealth Management, Franklin Templeton; Dodge & Cox; the San Francisco Bond Club; Technical Security Analysts Association of San Francisco; U.S. Commodity Funds; and R.W. Baird.

Our hosts, Alfred’s Steakhouse, did an outstanding job, thank you. And, a special note of appreciation for the Anderson Valley Winegrowers Association for its fine wines.

To learn more, to stay involved, join our LinkedIn group, follow us on Twitter, give a big thumbs-up on Facebook, and come to one of our program briefings held throughout the year.

With gratitude,
Ted Jablonski
